Prof. Richard Whittington is a strategy specialist and Professor at the University of Oxford's Said Business School.
A thought leader in strategy, he has won the Management Consulting Association's annual book prize and his work has appeared in the Financial Times, the Times and the Sunday Times. He has twenty years of working with executives in the strategy arena and been a consultant to the Institute of Directors on their strategic management training.
Richard's current and recent research includes work on how senior managers sustain strategic issues over time, how senior managers 'learn to strategise' and how to manage strategy workshops and away-days. He is also working on a large-scale project on 'the opening of strategy', the growing forces favouring inclusiveness and transparency in strategy-making. He is a co-author (with Gerry Johnson) of Europe's largest selling strategy textbook, Exploring Strategy. He has also authored or co-authored eight other books on strategy and management.
Richard has previously worked at Imperial College, London, and the Warwick Business School. He has held visiting positions at Harvard Business School, Groupe HEC, Paris, and the University of Toulouse.
Richard has a MA in History, a MBA from the University of Aston and a PhD in Strategy from Manchester Business School.
